Clinical Assessment of Sensory Integration

Course Description:
This course will provide a foundation for clinical assessment of sensory integration difficulties in children with SPD, autism and other learning disabilities. A structured observational assessment of sensory modulation and discrimination problems, foundational postural skills, and basic praxis difficulties will be presented. Emphasis will be on identifying sensory integration dysfunction of various sensory systems. Discussion will also address identification and contribution of sensory integrative dysfunctions to attention and behavior. Extensive videotape analysis and case study presentations will be used to develop observational skills. The course format, a combination of lecture, videotapes, and small group discussion allows for opportunities to address participant’s’ questions and concerns.

Course Objectives: The participant will be able to:

  • Observe and identify behaviors indicative of various sensory integrative dysfunctions.
  • Utilize a structured clinical observation format to complete a sensory integrative evaluation of sensory processing, praxis and postural skills.
  • Analyze behaviors to determine possible sensory/ motor contributors.
  • Identify appropriate goals for sensory integrative-based intervention based on clinical assessment.

Suggested Participants:

Day 1 and 2:
8:30am – 4:30pm
Intermediate Level.
This course will be applicable to occupational and physical therapists, and OT and PT assistants. Speech and language therapists with a background in sensory integration may wish to attend. Previous attendance at sensory integration overview or theory course is highly recommended.

Course Credit/ Continuing Education Units:
Each conference day qualifies for 6 clock hours as required by many national, state and local licensing boards and professional organizations.
